Fish Farming

FISH FARMING:-

The need to increase the fish production with the help of agriculture, animal husbandry, and irrigation practices, which can lead to better utilization of local resources and ultimately higher production & net profits is called FISH FARMING.

Fish farming techniques includes :-

  • Removal of unwanted plants and animals
  • Replacement of desirable species of fish.
  • Improvement of these species by crossbreeding and selection.
  • Increase of nutrient availability by the use of fertilizers and supplementary feeds.

METHODS OF FISH FARMING:-

1. Extensive Fish farming:-

In this type of farming, Economics and labour inputs  are usually low, Natural food production plays a very important and a major role and the system's productivity is relatively low. Fertilizers may be used to increase fertility and the fish production.

2. Semi-Intensive Fish farming:-

This type of farming requires a moderate level of inputs and the fish production is increased by the use of fertilizers & supplementary feeds. This means higher labour and higher feed costs, but higher fish yields is usually more compensate for this.

3. Intensive Fish farming:-

This type of farming involves high level of inputs and stocking the ponds with as many as fishes possible. The fish are fed supplementary feed, While Natural food production plays a minor role. In this system, difficult problems related to management can arise caused by high fish stocking densities(increased danger to harmful diseases and shortage of food). The high production costs force one to fetch a high market price in order to make the fish farm economically feasible.

ADVANTAGES OF FISH FARMING:-

  • Fish provides high quality animal protein for human consumption.
  • A farmer can integrate fish farming into the existing farm to create additional income and improve its water management.
  • Fish in a pond are usually close at hand.
  • Fish growth in ponds can be controlled: the farmers themselves select the fish species they wish to raise.
